Today I noticed the water in the hot-tub had some green coloring. probably some algea.
I deccided to use my sealskin cleaner to get rid of it, but perhaps it is due ti organice residu in the plumbing.

This list of the top five mind blowing financial scams will make your blood boil. These nefarious deeds caused many innocent individuals to lose everything. To make matters even worse, some of these scams have had governmental approval while the perpetrators going free. In addition, the full financial ramification of these scams may never be calculated.

Libor price fixing -The London interbank offer rate is the benchmark interest rate for many commercial and mortgage loans. The scam involved traders at banks such as JPMorgan Chase, Citibank, and others. They would change their interest rates giving the impression of adequate solvency. Estimates show that anywhere between $300 trillion to $800 trillion dollars are tied to the Libor rate. This affected you by changing your interest payment on a house, or commercial loan. You should be angry because even a slight increase in your interest rate can significantly raise your monthly interest payment.

Full Tilt Poker - During the boom of Texas No-Limit Poker, Full Tilt Poker was the place for online poker. Poker professionals such as Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, Howard Lederer were at the tables. Unfortunately, Full Tilt owners decided to help themselves to the collected money and not repay the winners. Eventually the federal government stepped in and closed all accounts and all money was frozen. As of now, over $350 million is owed to United States players.

Bernie Madoff - Bernard Madoff started an investment company with $5,000 dollars back in 1960. After gaining positive returns for his clients, Bernie continued to attract well-known individuals. His scheme was simple - attract new investors to pay off old investors. This scheme works until no more investors join and the money stops. At the height of the scam, Bernie controlled over $50 to $65 billion dollars. Today, only a fraction has been reclaimed for investors. Many clueless investors lost their entire life savings to the con-artist who has shown little remorse.

T.A.R.P. - The Troubled Asset Relief Program authorized over $700 billion in tax payer money to banks, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, bailing out General Motors, AIG, and various other entities. Many of these bailed out companies had risky loans, poor leadership, and not profitable. Basically, the federal government picked certain companies to rescue while allowing others to fail. This should trouble you because your tax dollars may have to once again bail out insolvent companies.

Federal Reserve - Instituted in 1917 under Woodrow Wilson, the Federal Reserve's role is: "to promote sustainable growth, high levels of employment, stability of prices to help preserve the purchasing power of the dollar and moderate long-term interest rates." It has done anything but that. The Federal Reserve has devalued the purchasing power of the dollar by 95%, allowed massive debt, fueled the boom-bust business cycle, eroded away savings, and created worthless paper money. This scam has put the power of the dollar in the hands of a few secret individuals.

Let these scams cause you to question critically anything that seems too good to be true.

I ran in to a book by Scott Berkun about innovation. Here's a summary:

A few highlights are:

• Divinchi’s quote – “Stand still and watch the patterns, which by pure chance have been generated: Stains on the wall, or the ashes in a fireplace, or the clouds in the sky, or the gravel on the beach or other things. If you look at them carefully you might discover miraculous inventions.”
• Inventors with hard work and ideas from others take thoughts and put them together into a finished puzzle – for instance, the cell phone is a culmination of various technologies.
• Many variables going on during an invention – for instance what would have happened if IBM bought Apple in the beginning? Steve Jobs offered it to them in the early stages.
• History is romanticized by those who interpreted it and there is no objective history.
• Page 91 – To brainstorm correctly you need to have three things: facts, ideas, and solutions. And you need to spend quality time in each section.
• Page 132 – Pick the right problem to solve and defining them correctly – remember the palm pilot objectives  – Fits in shirt pocket, syncs seamlessly with PC, fast and easy to use, and no more than $299.
• Page 146 – Software that rewards people for slowing down and thinking about what they’re reading and writing might be the greatest innovation of all time
• The interesting factors of why the United States is one of the few countries on the English standard and not metric…just has not caught on.

Europeese onderwijs vernieuwingen

Eind 2012 kwam de EU-commisaris voor onderwijs Androulla Vassiliou met een voorstel tot onderwijshervormingen: " Commission presents new Rethinking Education strategy". Veel mensen zijn zich niet bewust van de enorme mogelijkheden die de EU biedt op het gebied van onderwijs. Eurydice houdt uitstekende statistieken bij voor vergelijkingen. Zo ook in haar nieuwste rapport over onderwijstijd ind e verschillende lidstaten.

 De commissie heeft zich met het Life Long Learning programma haar lange termijn doelstellingen verankerd. Daarnaast beloond de Commissie regelmatig initiatieven. Zo heeft eTwinning (werkt mijn eigen school ook aan mee!) onlangs nog een prijzen uitgereikt voor beste cross-border school project. 

Makes me proud to be a citizen of the EU!

Op wikieducator.org is nu het handboek voor Open Educational Resources beschikbaar geworden.

Learning activities #1

1. Check list – each participant is provided with a tick list of activities they should have completed by the end of the session or programme. As the learners complete each activity they tick it off (good for showing progression throughout a programme)
2. Murder mystery – you provide a series of clues to solve a mystery. In pairs, learners   take on the role of a CSI and collect the evidence from the murder scene. They could then complete a 5W. (Why, What, Where, When, Who)
3. Carousel activity – resources are placed around the room. A worksheet is produced that corresponds with each set of resources that can be found around the room. Learners get a prearranged amount of time with each resource to complete the corresponding section of the worksheet before they have to move to the next resource.
4. Information extraction from books – books are located on different tables. An instruction card is placed next to each book listing the information that is required from each page. Learners extract the relevant information from the book and record it in their own words.
5. Workbook - Provide each participant with a workbook that requires them to complete elements to reinforce key learning points and encourage reflection. For example, fill in gaps, crosswords, blank spaces for their own free text, reflective questions…
6. Market Place – A set number of learners are given different information that they keep in their ‘market stall’. The remaining learners go to the different ‘market stalls’ and obtain the information from the stall holders. By the end of the activity the majority of learners will have collated all the relevant information.
7. Presentations – Learners research and prepare a presentation on an element of the programme. Good for reviewing previous sessions.
8. Posters – Same as presentations.
9. Thinking Hats ‐ Learners are provided with a primary information source (newspaper article/ current event/ selection of information, websites…..). They are then split into 6 groups. Each group will take ownership of a coloured hat. The group will then need to extract the information required from the primary information source focusing on the requirement of their hat (RED = key words and emotions, BLACK = facts and figures, YELLOW = good points, PURPLE = negative points/things that went wrong, GREEN = alternatives/future). The final group will be wearing BLUE – they will need to be in charge and manage the conversations and discussions that are occurring in each group. After the information has been collected, the sub-groups present the information collected to the rest of the group. This activity works well when comparing cases studies etc.
10. Projects – Tip: Make sure they are work based projects with properly defined scopes and outcomes. You could even cost them and demonstrate some ROI on the training.

Steve Jobs Scholen

Wat een animo is er toch in Nederland om met Ipads les te gaan geven. Op O4NT.nl gaan ze helemaal los. Apple zal wel een verdomd goede salespitch hebben gehad. Ik mis wel elke keer een meerjaren planning. wat zijn de kosten als de support over 2 jaar stopt...wat zijn de kosten van alle extra apps ...en laten we alle kennis t.a.v. M$ systemen even buiten de deur zetten. Anno 2013 gaan we toch niet proprietary software ondersteunen. Noem eens 1 goed wel overwogen argument...ongeloveloos..

Leerstijlen onbetrouwbaar...

De psycholoog Bertram R. Forer gaf psychologiestudenten een persoonlijkheidstest. Ze vulden de vragenlijst in. Forer deed niets met de antwoorden en gaf zijn studenten allemaal exact dezelfde tekst met een beschrijving van hun persoonlijkheid. Deze tekst luidde ongeveer als volgt:
 

Je hebt er een grote behoefte aan dat anderen je aardig vinden. Naar buiten toe heb je jezelf goed onder controle, maar innerlijk ben je soms onzeker, en dan twijfel je of je wel de juiste beslissing hebt genomen. Je hebt nog veel onbenutte mogelijkheden. Je bent kritisch ingesteld - ook op jezelf - en je neemt niet zomaar iets van anderen aan. Hoewel je een paar persoonlijke zwakheden hebt, slaag je er aardig in die te compenseren. Soms ga je graag met mensen om, maar op andere tijden ben je meer in jezelf gekeerd. Dat komt omdat jij van afwisseling houdt en je vindt het vervelend om met beperkingen te maken te hebben. Ten slotte, je geeft je niet zomaar bloot, want je hebt gemerkt dat het onverstandig is als je dat te vaak doet. Voor vrienden daarentegen sta je open.
 

Hij vroeg zijn studenten de tekst te lezen en aan te geven met een cijfer van 0 tot 5, in hoeverre de student zichzelf herkende in de tekst, 5 voor ‘excellent assessment’ en 4 voor ‘goed assessment’. Het gemiddelde in de groep lag op 4,26. De test is honderden keren herhaald met psychologiestudenten en het gemiddelde lag steeds op 4,2. Forer had ontdekt dat mensen de neiging hebben om vage en algemeen geformuleerd teksten over hun persoonlijkheid te accepteren en ze zelfs als unieke persoonlijke eigenschappen te zien (Pijl, 2004).
Het Forer-effect wordt soms ook wel het Barnum-effect genoemd. Barnum was een circusbaas, die een meester was in het bedenken van nietszeggende teksten, die echter wel op bijna iedereen van toepassing zijn. Een mooi voorbeeld van dit effect zijn de horoscopen uit het ochtendblad. Helaas moeten we ook vaststellen dat veel persoonlijkheidstesten dit niveau wetenschappelijk gezien niet veel ontstijgen. Uit onderzoek blijkt dat de betrouwbaarheid (herhaalbaarheid bij verschillende metingen) en validiteit (meten de vragen wat er gemeten moeten worden) van bijvoorbeeld het Enneagram volstrekt onvoldoende is. De persoonlijkheidstypen die uit deze tests rollen, zijn eerder een soort amateurpsychologie dan wetenschappelijk gefundeerde persoonlijkheidsbeschrijvingen. Het taalgebruik in de vele tientallen boeken die over het Enneagram verschenen zijn, is zonder uitzondering zeer wollig en voor meerdere interpretatie vatbaar. Het maakt mensen het wel heel gemakkelijk om zich in -sociaal of binnen de organisatie gewenste- types te herkennen: het Barnum-effect dus. Bestel hier het onderzoek van Patrick Vermeren.
 
Een mogelijk verrassender conclusie is dat het gebrek aan betrouwbaarheid en validiteit ook geldt voor de zeer populaire MBTI-test. Vrijwel geen enkele zichzelf respecterende wetenschappelijk psycholoog maakt nog gebruik van dit model zie 1, 2. Het model is gebaseerd op een nooit wetenschappelijk geverifieerde persoonlijkheidstheorie van Carl Jung en in de literatuur moet vooral de indeling in de 16 persoonlijkstypen (ISTJ, ESTJ etc.) het ontgelden. Er is echter wel veel vraag naar. En in een commerciële omgeving creëert dat een rijk geschakeerd aanbod aan testaanbieders. (Bron)
